Development of a Friends of the School/Parent Body

Earlier this year I floated a concept for a Friends of the School/Parent Body type organisation. It was such a long time ago and so much has happened since then that I have included the link so that you can refresh your minds.

We received positive feedback about the concept and so have decided to go ahead with it. The intention is to enable a broad range of ways that parents can be involved in supporting and contributing to the school. I have suggested five strands of involvement and within each strand a number of projects could take place over the year. The projects within a strand could run consecutively and concurrently. The projects should be of varying lengths from a one-off, one day commitment, to full year or longer.

Co-ordinating Group
The parent/teacher body will be a subcommittee of the board and as such will be headed up by a Co-ordinating Group made up of at least one BOT member, a member of staff and 3 parent representatives. Their role will be varied but essentially it will be to assist and facilitate the initiation and successful completion of projects that align with the developing vision of the school. Each member could be specifically responsible for the co-ordination and facilitation of one strand.

Role of the co-ordinating GroupTo be concerned with the whole strategy
  • To ensure that the vision of the school is supported, developed and implemented by some (very light) screening of projects
  • To encourage community members to initiate projects and act as a conduit for new ideas
  • To co-ordinate the development of projects and encourage a variety of opportunities for people to be involved in ways that suit their circumstances
  • To ensure that the school community is not over-burdened by too many projects
  • To facilitate the successful completion of projects
  • To assist in the recruitment of people for projects
  • To keep the community (including the wider community)informed of the opportunities that are available and of what is going on
  • From time-to-time, to initiate projects
  • To provide support for those with an idea but lack confidence to implement it
  • To provide a co-ordinated approach across strands and within strands
  • To report back to the whole group on progress to date

The co-ordinating group will meet regularly, but not more than once per month.

Nominations for Co-ordinating Group

We are keen to receive parent nominations for this co-ordinating group. You may either put yourself forward for the role or someone else may nominate you. Please send an email by the end of business 15 June to principal@amesbury.school.nz with the name of the nominated person and give some reasons why this person (you) would be suitable for the role. This year, a committee of the Board of Trustees will consider the nominations and choose the three parent representatives. In future years, this process may be done by voting at an Annual Meeting.

When we put this information out initially, several people indicated their interest in being on the Co-ordinating Group. Could those people please give an indication as to their ongoing interest in being considered.

Any questions or queries, please contact Lesley principal@amesbury.school.nz.

Kind regards

Lesley
