Community Evening - Wednesday, 11 June

It was really lovely catching up with a good number of our families and their children on Wednesday evening. It is quite hard to fit the organisation of these evenings into our busy schedules, but always it is very worthwhile and lots of fun. As people were arriving, I realised how much I was enjoying catching up with people and that it seemed a long time since we had last met together - even though it had only been a term.

I enjoyed taking the children's activity which was a game of "Banana or the Bag". Thanks to Demelza - my beautiful assistant! Unfortunately, no one managed to win the trip to Hawaii (!), but many took home prizes and everyone had a lollipop or two. "Faux Pas" of the Evening goes to Zoe who insisted on the bag in spite of a great deal of encouragement from me to take the lollies (my final offer - 500 lollies!) and she won the boobie prize of a cute little paper clip.

Parents heard about the following from a range of teachers and contributed to discussions about:

*Brisbane feedback - Matt and Helene
*Ground's Development Consultation - Angela
*New Block Design - Mike and Urs
*Senior Leadership Programme - Andrea
*Engaging Boys In Writing - Amaria, Erica and Matt

Thanks to Gail for organising the food. I don't know if it was only me...but the pizzas were particularly delicious this time around. I really enjoyed the meat lovers' pizza with bbq sauce.

This term students have been working on using language devices in their writing. We asked families to use certain language devices to describe their families. Here are some examples of what they wrote:

"The Cornishs are as crunchy as cornflakes." - alliteration and simile
"The totally terrific Topps take the cake." - metaphor and alliteration
"The Davidsons are as noisy as a school of children." - simile
"The raving Ravers ride ridiculous routes." - alliteration
"The tenacious Talbots target trampoline tournaments." - alliteration
"The arty, amazing Arnolds are awesome!" - alliteration
"Outrageous, organised, oogling, ostrich-like O'Connors" - alliteration
"The majestical Murphys moved many miles and love Windy Wellington." - alliteration
"The Walmsleys are as fast as ferraris." - simile
"Our family are puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together." - metaphor
"Our family is a tower of strength." - metaphor

Next term's Community Evening is being held 20 August 2014 and we have a wonderful speaker coming. Please keep this date free.
