Churton Park Community Centre - What's on next week

Hi Everyone

A short and sweet newsletter this week – and a bit early as I wanted to remind you that we still have a few Neighbours Cards in the Centre to collect if you would like some for your street. With people away over the next month or so, it’s a good time to make sure you have your neighbours contact details on hand…just in case. You have until 2pm tomorrow to pop in and grab some! If you can’t get in, but think you’d like some, email me direct today or tomorrow morning and I’ll see what we can sort out. If you’re in my street, I’ll pop one in your letterbox J

A reminder that CPCC closes for the year at 2pm tomorrow and re-opens after Anniversary Weekend on Tuesday 21st January.

ON NEXT WEEK
Hopefully lots of relaxing, good food and exciting gifties, all enjoyed in the blazing sunshine!

Chromebooks@Amesbury

Many schools around New Zealand are trialling/using/exploring BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) as a strategy to enable students 1:1 access to computing devices for their learning. Schools are achieving this in different ways. Some are adding a device to their stationery lists. Others are beginning by allowing those who have a device at home to bring it into school and use it for their learning thus increasing the number of devices available.

As a staff, board and school community, we have explored BYOD as a way of enabling a higher ratio of devices to students. However, we acknowledge that inherent in the BYOD strategy are complexities that are difficult to work out. The issue of equity is one such complexity, as are issues related to security.

The board and staff are in agreement that cloud-based and other learning made possible by technology is powerful and that a high ratio of devices to students is required to effectively and successfully leverage the learning opportunities and advantages available with technology. This is particularly so as one gets further up the school.

However, the Board is not convinced that BYOD is the way to provide this. Rather, it has decided that the provision of mobile devices is so integral to the way teaching and learning is done at Amesbury School, that the Board will do its best to fund the necessary provision of devices. Hence, the recent purchase of 80 - 90 Chromebooks.

Therefore, BYOD is off the table in the medium-term. However, a number of parents have asked if they can purchase Chromebooks for their children at school prices. Some of these parents are keen for their children to have their own devices which they can use both at home and at school. We have agreed to allow this given that the advantage of cloudbased learning is that it allows anywhere, anytime, just-in-time learning. However, we are very clear that while we welcome student-owned Chromebooks at school, these machines must have the management consul loaded onto them so that teachers will be able to check what students are doing on their Chromebooks at any time. This is an essential security requirement.

So, to clarify.... the school will provide students with significant access to mobile device (particularly in the Harakeke Hub). Students may purchase Chromebooks through the school. If the intention is for the student to use his/her Chromebook at school, then the management consul must be loaded on.

If you are keen to piggy back on the school's order, then please let Matt know as soon as possible.

Lost Property, Student Accounts & 2014 Uniform Orders

LOST PROPERTY
Please make sure you check the lost property boxes around school before the end of term. There is a box in each of the hubs and another one in the office.  Any items left at the end of term will be donated to charity shops (providing they have no names in them).

STUDENT ACCOUNTS
All accounts must be paid up by this Friday 13th December.  Any purchases after this date will be strictly on a cash basis only.  If you need a statement emailed to you, please email office@amesbury.school.nz.  If your account is in credit, this will be carried over to next year.

2014 UNIFORM
If you require any uniform items for next term, please order by Friday 13th December.  The office will be open on Friday 31st January (11:00am-2:00pm) for collection of orders.  Orders can be emailed to the office, or you can drop in to fill in a form.

Many thanks,
Gail

Teacher Only Days 2014 - 3/4 June

It is usual practice for schools to take one or two teacher-only days per year to enable professional learning together. The school closes for a teacher-only day, but has to stay open for an extra day at the end of the year. To date we have not had any teacher-only days at Amesbury School.

However, next year, the staff have an opportunity to attend an international congress in Brisbane with arguably the biggest and best line up of educational speakers in the world including Sir Ken Robinson of Ted Talk Changing Paradigms fame and Prof Sugata Mitra of the Hole in the Wall experiment in India.

The two teacher only days will follow on from Queen's Birthday weekend making it a five day weekend. We are giving you advanced warning of this so that you have plenty of time to make any arrangements necessary. We feel confident that Kelly Club will be able to provide care for the two days if needed.

With these teacher-only days, school will now close 17th December, which is still earlier than we will finish this year.

If you have any queries about this, please do not hesitate to speak to Lesley.
