A dash of India

Students were treated to some traditional Indian dance today. It is much like ballet with specific stances and positions. We learned that the hand gestures in the dance are a way of communicating a message, much like sign language.

We were also given some information about the origin of Diwali and how it is celebrated. The Diwali Festival of Lights will be held at the TSB Bank Arena on Sunday 19 October from 1pm.

Thank you to the Asia Awareness Foundation for organising these dancers to come in. We really enjoyed both their performance and their teaching.

Amesbury School Athletics Day, 2014

Once again Wellington turned on its weather for our athletics day at Newtown Park. The sun shone all day and nothing but a light breeze drifted through the stadium. It even brought a few of the Phoenix players to watch and cheer for our students.

It was such a pleasure to watch all the students competing. There were some close tussles and some outstanding performances. I saw students showing persistence, determination and having a go. I also saw students enjoying themselves and having fun while competing. Their attitude and effort was commendable.

There are a number of people who made the day run smoothly. Firstly, thank you to the teachers for your hard work. It was a long, hot day in the sun, but you kept your enthusiasm right to the end. You helped make the day enjoyable for both students and parents.

Thank you to the parents who helped at events or helped to take groups of students from one place to another. We were very impressed with how willing and flexible you were.

Another thank you needs to go out to Vaughan Oates (Athletics Wellington) and Don Dalgliesh (Wellington Scottish) who stayed at the track for the whole day to give us a hand. These two men have been involved with athletics for a long time and we really appreciated the expertise they offered.

Finally, thank you to the parents who came down to the track to support their children. It was great to see you cheering on and congratulating all Amesbury School children.

We will be putting the Northern Zone team together this weekend and will let children know who is in the team on Monday. Parents will be e-mailed with all the information at some point next week. We'll be offering some extra practice sessions for students who have made it into the Northern Zone team. The timetable will be organised this weekend and will be made available for students on Monday.

The results have been put together and included in this post, as well as a slide show of photos from throughout the day.

Amesbury Awesomeness Awards

A BIG congratulations to Lopa and Lucy for receiving the Amesbury Awesomeness Awards for term 3. They were congratulated for their awards in the usual Amesbury way - a haka. See below the commendations written by the teachers of their hubs.

Lopa
We have been very impressed with your attitude toward learning this term. You have been showing all of the high five values.

Excellence - You always do your best work. This has been particularly noticeable in writing where you go back to your work and try to improve it. We have noticed you becoming an insider into your learning.
Authenticity - You are developing confidence and enjoy sharing your ideas with the whole hub. You showed leadership in your See a need, Fill a need project by ensuring your project was being completed.
Sustainability - You are great at tidying up the hub and can often be seen making sure the Chromebooks are stacked neatly on top of each other and are all plugged in.
Connecting and Including - Your See a need, Fill a need project showed that you value friendship. The aim of your project was to ensure all children had a friend to play with.
Creating and Inquiring - You enjoy creating pieces of artwork or putting together a song or a dance.

You have had an amazing term in the hub and we look forward to seeing you continue to grow as an insider in your learning.

Lucy, you are a happy, cheerful girl who is friendly to everyone.  You regularly display  connecting and including as you listen carefully to others and respond kindly and thoughtfully when appropriate.  You care about your peers and you are always kind and inclusive.

You are an independent, self motivated learner who constantly puts 100% into whatever you do.  You can settle to tasks quickly and prioritise your most important tasks, which has enabled you to consistently meet deadlines.  It is wonderful to watch you always doing your best and striving for excellence.

We are particularly impressed with how hard you work and how well you persevere until success is reached. You are never put off by obstacles in your learning, you just keep trying and trying until you reach your goal. What a motivated, hard working learner you are!

We are all so proud of your efforts and achievements. We hope you are proud of yourself, too.

Congratulations Lucy, you deserve this Amesbury Awesomeness award!

Churton Park Community Centre - What's On to 19th October 2014

There are still space in the Safe Driving Classes for Seniors, coming up next week and the week after. See below for further details.

Fill the KCA Warehouse Food Drive - Kiwi Community Assistance have recently opened a new warehouse, and in a wonderful initiative sparked by lovely local woman, Michelle Harrison, we will be collecting food throughout October to help KCA fill their new warehouse. Check out the list on the poster attached for the kinds of items we are looking for and add one item to your next shopping trip. Michelle estimates that if every household in Churton Park alone contributes one item, that will be over 2,000 items of much needed food re-distributed to those most in need.
