Walking School Buses

Dear parents/caregivers,
Walking school busesWe’d like to introduce Walking School Buses for Amesbury School children.  By walking to school, children get fresh air, enjoy the activity of walking and have the opportunity to :
-  Learn how to safely negotiate the roads
-  Develop independence
-  Talk and socialise with friends and neighbours
-  Arrive at school refreshed and ready to enjoy the school day
-  Ease traffic congestion and improve safety around our school
About the walking school busA walking school bus usually has at least one adult “driver” who walks along an agreed route, collecting all children waiting at designated “bus stops” and walking them to school.  After school, they walk back along the same route.
Are you interested ?
We would like to gauge support for setting up a walking school bus for our school.  We would be grateful if you would complete this short survey  http://goo.gl/forms/yL7n0t9hMb by
Friday 27th February 2015.
We will start the walking school buses as soon as there is enough support to do so.  The service will be free and a co-ordinator will organise parent volunteers to act as leaders.  There will be a maximum of eight children per adult and, while it’s a great thing to do, you don’t have to volunteer if you’re unable to.
Children can use the bus every day or on whatever days suit the family.  Routes will be established along the roads most used by our students, depending on the level of interest shown by parents and their willingness to volunteer as leaders.
Meeting
We will hold a meeting at the school in the next few weeks to discuss parents’ responses to the survey and our proposed walking school bus scheme.  You will be notified of the date via email, and your attendance and input would be very welcome.
You will contacted with more details if you can’t make the meeting but express an interest in the walking school bus through the survey.

Angela Natali (Matilda's mum) is the co-ordinator and is happy to answer any questions and would particularly enjoy hearing about the experiences of parents and caregivers who have had involvement in other walking bus programmes. Angela can be contacted on 0212724321 or angela.natali@vuw.ac.nz

New Child Restraint Laws - From the NZ Transport Agency

From Nov 1st 2013 the child restraint laws will be changing. The mandatory use of child restraints in vehicles will be extended by two years, with all children required to be correctly secured in an approved restraint until their 7th birthday (this includes booster seats).

Children aged seven will continue to be required to be secured in an approved child restraint if one is available in the vehicle, and if not, in any child restraint or safety belt that is available, until their 8th birthday.

You can read more at www.nzta.govt.nz/childrestraints. Please note the Q&A in this document.

Subway Lunches - Update

We've had such a good response for our first week of Subway lunch orders (more than 40 orders), that we've decided to run this weekly until further notice.
To bring this in line with our current school lunch order system, all orders will be taken online from next week (no forms to fill out!).  We will add the cost of your order to your child's account, so you will not need to send cash into the office - unless you prefer to do this of course.

This link to School Lunches 2015 will take you directly to the order form, where you can order Subway on Wednesdays or school lunch on Fridays.

If you have any queries, just email: office@amesbury.school.nz

Thanks,

Gail

Known costs for 2015

You may have already received some, or all of the information below via email. We thought it might be useful however, to have a consolidated post showing known costs for 2015.

School Donation 2015
The Ministry of Education provides a decile-based Operational Grant, which is funding for the basic administration, teaching and property running costs of the school. As a decile 10 school, the government considers our students to be from the highest socio-economic area, so we receive a smaller operational grant per student than lower decile schools.
To enable us to provide quality education and additional resources to enhance learning, we rely on voluntary donations from parents. Voluntary donations are tax deductible. These have not increased in the three years the school has been open.
One child attending school - $240
Two children attending school - $400
Three or more children attending school - $480

A 10% discount off these amounts if offered if the school donation is paid in full by 31st March 2015.  There is a reduction for students joining school part way through the year.

Stationery & Mathletics Licence Fee
School provides all the stationery that students need throughout the year. The charge for this is $40, and this also includes 50% of the Mathletics licence fee. School absorbs the other 50% of the Mathletics licence.  This fee is invoiced at the beginning of the school year.

Electives & Cooking Activities Fee
We ask families to pay a nominal fee of $20 per student, per year towards resources & ingredients for electives and cooking activities.

Swimming
All students will participate in swimming lessons during the course of the year. Koru students will go once per week in term 1.  Harakeke students will receive 9 lessons over the course of a two week period at the end of term 1. The cost is $50 per student, which includes the lesson and return transport to the pool.

Music Lessons
We offer a range of group and individual music lessons, which are delivered by specialist teachers on Wednesdays and Fridays during the school day.  This is an optional activity, and if you choose to enrol your child, fees must be paid at the beginning of each term to secure your child's place.  Invoices are sent out to those families who book lessons.

Camp & Field Trips
All students will have the opportunity to participate in camp and field trips.  As the cost of these events can vary greatly, these invoices are sent out as and when trips are arranged.  We offer options for payments in installments for larger amounts.

If you would like any further information on any of the above, please email office@amesbury.school.nz

Many thanks,
Gail

Communication at Amesbury School

There are several ways the school will communicate with you.

1. Email -
  • You will receive emails from eTAP (our student management system) which go out to all parents. On occasion these have gone straight into some people's spam folder. If you think you are not receiving these emails, please check your spam folder. If this is happening, we can assist you to change your account settings so that this no longer happens. Please feel free to contact us regarding this.
  • You will receive emails from-time-to time from Urs and Angela, our hub leaders.
  • You will receive emails, from time-to-time from your child's whanau teacher or another teacher, or, on occasion, from Lesley, the principal.
  • The Office will email you with invoices and account information and other important matters.
  • In general, email will be used when communication is urgent/time-bound or when we want to personalise communication.
NOTE: Some people have had difficulty keeping up with the emails they receive. We strongly                          suggest you put all emails received from the school in a folder for easy access if you
require the information again. The problem with emails is that once they are off the                              page, they tend to be out of mind and very hard to find again. Shortly, we are going to
upgrade our website to create an archive to store important information such as camp
and trip newsletters for easy access by parents.

2. Amesbury BLOGS: We have two of these.
  • One is the Amesbury Learning BLOG which is a record of the two hubs' journey. This is much more related to students, their learning and their activities. Students and teachers create the content shared on this BLOG. We really encourage parents to comment on these BLOGposts.
  • The Amesbury BLOG is more administrative and provides important information and notices for parents as well community notices.
  • You can sign up for both these BLOGS and receive daily update emails giving you links to the latest content. If you don't want to subscribe to these emails, then please do check the BLOGs frequently or you might miss out on important content plus it is great to know what your children are up to.
3. Facebook: We have a facebook page: Current Facebook Page. It is a bit confusing because we appear to have two facebook pages. This is the link to the one we are currently using. Lots of people like accessing school information via Facebook. This tends to be more informal information about the school and what is happening.

4. The Amesbury Digest: This is emailed out every two weeks or so and pulls together information from all these sources, so that you have what is still relevant all in one place. We try to keep this as comprehensive as possible while ensuring that it is still accessible and not overwhelming.

5. Community evenings: these are held 3 - 4 times per year and are an important two-way communication mechanism.

6. Text: in the case of emergency, you will be contacted by text if the service is available

5. One-on-one: staff will contact you by phone, text or in person, from time-to-time, as and when they consider it necessary.

Amesbury School Chosen for OECD Best Practice in Education Facilities

Amesbury School is being showcased on the OECD's database of 'Best Practice in Education Facilities.'

We were contacted towards the end of last year by personnel of the OECD Centre for Effective Learning Environments who asked if we would allow our school to be showcased on their database of innovative learning environments. Of course we said, "Yes!" and provided them with the information they required. Our profile was submitted to a committee who accepted it for the OECD's database and website. Here is the link to the entry about our school: Database: Best Practice in Education Facilities

The school has been included in the following Exemplary design categories: comfort, community use and involvement, energy efficiency, flexible learning settings, furniture, green school, outdoor spaces, technology rich

From the website:
"The OECD Centre for Effective Learning Environments (CELE) and the European Investment Bank(EIB) launched the “Database of Best Practices in Educational Facilities Investment” on 29 September 2011. It seeks to inform the planning, design, construction, management and evaluation of educational spaces, combining resources for strategic investment in educational infrastructure, with exemplary school and university facilities from all over the world."

Lunches will be available on two days a week in Term 1:

Wednesdays: Subway ($7 for a 6" sandwich, a cookie and a juice box). You can either pick up a hard copy order form from the office, or use the "Subway Wednesday" online form.
Subway require cash payments for these orders, so please ensure you send your money in a named envelope to the office by 4:00pm on Tuesdays.

Trip to Waiouru Army Museum Information

Amesbury School is providing all students with the opportunity to participate in an exciting overnight field trip to Waiouru Army Museum.

Our Term 1 inquiry is Living Together. This inquiry moves through a number of smaller modules: exploring ourselves as learners, our hubs as learning spaces, our local community and the wider community. The final module in this inquiry explores Gallipoli. 2015 is the start of the centenary of World War 1 and we are keen for our students to be aware of this global event and its meaning for us today.

Our overnight field trip will consist of two visits to the Army Museum. The trip will run over two days: travelling up by bus in the morning and spending the afternoon at the museum completing the first part of our programme. We will stay overnight at Venture Lodge (a lovely lodge in Ohakune owned by Auckland Grammar School) and return to the museum the next day for the second part of our programme. We will then travel back to Wellington after lunch.

The journey to and from Waiouru will have stops for bathroom breaks and snacks, including a time to play and explore the wonderful park at Levin.

The programme at the museum will include the following experiences:
  • A complete guided tour of the museum
  • Dressing up in army gear, including camouflage paint!
  • Experiencing what it's like to be an army medic: administer 'in the field'  first aide to friends, carry them on stretchers etc
  • Understand more about Gallipoli and necessity of remembrance
  • Cook and eat army rations, using a 24 hour soldier ration pack and field equipment
  • Ride through the mud in an army humvee (high mobility vehicle)
This field trip is open to all students; content will be adjusted to meet the needs and ages of each group. It is not a compulsory trip - students can opt to go on the field trip or stay at school with other students and teachers.

We believe this will be a fantastic trip and a great opportunity for our students. Many of these experiences are only part of school museum programmes - they are not offered to the general public. For your information -  not surprisingly, students will be exposed to some graphic war content at the army museum. For example, there is a a triage tent with a fairly realistic model of a soldier lying on a bed who has had a limb blown off.

The cost of the trip will be $90 per student. We are very happy for people to spread the cost of this trip over multiple payments, if required.

We ask that you complete this Field trip consent form, even if you do not want your child/ren to go on the trip. The first two questions are compulsory questions for everyone, and the rest of the form is only for students who will be going on the trip. This will allow us to confirm exact numbers easily and make plans accordingly.

We need people to complete this form by Wednesday 18th February. Parents and caregivers are most welcome to come along on the trip; it promises to be great fun! There is a section on the consent form where you can express interest in coming along as parent help on the trip. There will be some costs for parents - such as the accommodation for the night and travel - unless parents take their own vehicle. But we will try to keep the cost down. We will be able to be clearer about this once we know what the demand is.

High Five Awards - Week 2, 2015

Congratulations to the following students who received a
High Five Award in week 2:

This month’s meeting is on Tuesday 17th February at 7.30pm.

·         ** S.I.M.P.L.E   AWARENESS ** - Alternate Monday evenings 7.30pm to 9pm. Free introductory session on Monday 23rd Feb 2015. In ancient times people lived in harmony with nature, listened to the ebb and flow of the energies, saw the signs and connected to their inner counsel.  The “Wise Ones” were only those who had fully embraced their awareness. The teaching of S.I.M.P.L.E   AWARENESS has been lost over the course of time, and it is now time for individuals to reconnect to the Awareness of our ancient ones to become their own “Wise One”. S.I.M.P.L.E   AWARENESS allows an individual to gain a new direction, perspective, harmony and clarity in their life and become a catalyst for change in an individual’s life, by going places they never thought possible previously.  S~ Synchronicity - I ~ Intuition - M ~ Meditation - P ~Perspective - L ~ “Life” - E ~ Empowerment.
