News from the Library

Kia ora and welcome back to school for the last term of the year.  Here is some news and updates from the library.

  • Scholastic Book Club order forms went home today. The closing date for orders is Monday 29 October.  Please pay by completing the credit card payment information or by cheque made out to Scholastic New Zealand (no cash or cheques to Amesbury School please). This will be the last book club order for this year. We will hold a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of the multi-cultural festival and gala so there will be another opportunity to purchase Scholastic books then - just in time for Christmas presents!
  • We earn points which we exchange for books when we sell Scholastic books through the school. Some of those books we keep for our school library and some we donate to school libraries in Samoa. We encourage you to support Scholastic as our school benefits and we help less fortunate school libraries too.
  • All items that were issued before the holidays are now overdue so please check that your child has returned their books, DVDs, magazines etc. The automated reminders and overdues doesn't seem to be working at the moment so please don't rely on receiving an email (I'm looking into this). It's great to see that a number of children have come to the library independently this week and exchanged their books.
  • Unfortunately a few of our lovely new books have been damaged already.  Please encourage your children to be kind to our books and to carry them carefully to and from school.  I ask the children to either carry their books in a book bag or in a pocket in their school bag that keeps books away from drink bottles.
  • We now have eReaders available for loan to the Year 4-6 students. They hold chapter books which is why just the senior students can borrow them at present.  Loan agreements have been sent home to be signed. If you need another one please let me know. There are lots of ebooks suitable for junior students that can be accessed via the ebooks page on the library website.
  • The senior students have written a number of book reviews recently. You can read their reviews on the library blog.  There are also QR codes on the back cover of the books that link to the reviews so children can check their peers opinions of books as well as reading blurbs when deciding which book to read.
  • Special thanks to Elizabeth Barr, a volunteer from our community with no family connections to Amesbury School, who has spent many hours processing new library books for us this year. Her contribution to the library has been enormous and is very much appreciated.
Kind regards and happy reading,
Carolyn
