Term 1 Learning Celebration: A BLAST!

The term one Learning Celebration was held on April 17 - the last Friday of term. It was great to see so many parents present even though the weather was not wonderful. I don't know about you, but I really enjoyed the celebration. The performances were just delightful, and I really loved the new-look expo style. I really enjoyed going around the different activities and talking to the kids. I learned all sorts of things about local history and maths and how to make yummy quiche.

I had a wonderful conversation with Gabriel about some maths that he was really proud of. The thing that really impressed me was how precisely Gabriel was able to tell me what made that particular maths session/activity such a successful learning experience. He identified that the learning activity had just the right level of challenge - neither too hard nor too easy - and that, because it was just right, it made the step up seem easy and almost seemless. Well done, Gabriel!

However, what I most enjoyed about the Learning Celebration was seeing you, the parents, taking such an interest in not only your own children's work, but other children's work. For me this was very exciting and showed how much we have all matured together as a learning community. I was very proud - of our parent body, the students and the teachers. I hope you know that what you did as parents for all the children will help them to see themselves as successful learners. The buzz the students got from seeing that even strangers were interested in their work will bear fruit. Thank you so much!

One parent commented that she noticed that our High Five values are part of the lexicon now. She said, "I heard diverse, and connected & included used lots today by students. Also the inquiry/learning cycle...understanding the problem space & posing questions are exactly what I teach my analysts to do when I allocate them new work."

The learning celebration was a great finish to a wonderful term of learning. Check out the photos below.

  1. I really enjoyed the different format of the learning celebration. Nice to interact with the children in small groups and to see what they were most proud of accomplishing over the past term.
