ICAS Testing - International Competitions and Assessments for Schools

A small number of Amesbury School students sat the ICAS international tests. What was noticeable from the results was that our students achieved significantly above the NZ average of those who sat the tests in Computer Skills and Science. Someone recently said to me that we don't seem to do much science at Amesbury School. We do a formal scientific inquiry for a full term every year - which is about what can be expected in terms of covering the different learning areas in a year. This year we looked at habitats and environments. We have run electives that have focused on science. Further, a strong focus on the environment and sustainability is a dimension of many of our other inquiries. However, also significant are the scientific inquiries that students often carry out as the focus of their projects of passion. I suspect we probably do more science than appears at first glance at Amesbury School.
